In the new building for the properties at the Winkelstrasse in Neuaffoltern Zurich, 32 residential units are being arranged in three full stories and an attica floor.
Proposing a freestanding volume and replacing the former row of buildings restores the urban situation in the neighborhood with its detached individual houses. The building follows the sloping terrain in steps of half stories leaving as much open space as possible on the garden side. The form derived from the internal floor plan follows the principle of rotational symmetry, allowing for a house without backsides.
The outer walls open in facets towards the light in an expressive form, extending the living space and providing each flat with a private outdoor space protected from views. The building figure balances the external constraints of the plot geometry, as well as the distance from the border, the neighboring buildings, road and creek, and combines these with a spatial figure which is organized towards the light for the best possible quality of living.
Extract from the jury report:
“An unconventional contribution at first glance, which is consistently developed based on its inner structure. The highly compact and efficient building is designed in such a way that light can enter the flats in the best possible way. The modular and flexible structure allows for different combinations of apartments. The building has no rear sides and is characterized by two equally high-quality main façades, both on the street and garden side.”
