Houses arranged in groups, halfway up to Rosswald and on the way to Simplon, nestled in the green slopes, facing the valley. From the many individual buildings which are loosely but precisely placed, a place emerges. It is embedded in the landscape, open and yet adaptable, individual and yet closely connected, diverse and yet familiar. A home is created.
The project fits into the village structure of Ried-Brig and its exceptional location. In relation to the Santa Rita house, which connects groups of rooms to communal corridors, this project connects individual houses with pergola and embeds them in the garden. Furthermore, Santa Rita combines cubic volumes clad in dark wood finish to form an ensemble, and this project in relation to Santa Rita proposes simple gabled houses in timber-frame structure and a wooden façade. Quiet volumes on a stone base, with a filigree and transparent façade facing southwest towards the valley.
Living in senior-citizens home means above all adjusting to a new place, a new community and a new atmosphere in the latter chapters of life. It also means giving up on the individual space – garden, garage and probably one’s house. The project therefore offers many qualities and experiences in a relatively small space – balconies and glazed loggias as stacked gardens, apartments with various configurations and uses, arbours and pergolas as a small neighbourhood, a blooming landscape with small paths and common gardens, terraces and community rooms with a view of the magnificent Rhone valley.
