In the 21st century, Zug transforms into a city and Metalli into a central urban area, turning the existing Metalli Mall into the Metalli neighborhood. To achieve this, the area should open up and become more permeable to the outside, thus optimally linking the surrounding districts. It becomes part of the city fabric.

Through reconstruction, punctual densification and the opening of entrances and pathways, the area will transform and connect to the urban fabric, while the newly formed Metalliplatz will turn it into a central city location. The collective spaces, the density of use and identification that have developed over time in the area’s interior will face the city. The area is maturing.

Four squares and two courtyards with different identities are linked to each other and to the cityscape by a series of alleyways. A continuous pavement provides an urban identity to the squares and highlights their design. Three gardens with varying degrees of publicness serve as walkable miniatures of Zug’s natural properties—from the “Little Wilderness”, to the “Mountain Lake” in front of the new apartments, or the “Mountain Forest” on the converted building on Baarerstrasse.
