The Zurich main station is both a hub for mobility and an urban space. With over 460,000 visitors on weekdays, it serves five times more people than Zurich Airport at its peak. At the same time, it is located in the center of the city, and its influence extends into the neighboring areas.
As a mobility hub, the train station offers various transfer options. It is future-oriented and adaptable, accommodating all modes of transportation. However, efforts are made to minimize traffic caused by cars passing through. As an urban space, the train station is deeply connected to the surrounding neighborhoods. It provides a wide range of users with access to mobility, services, and a high quality of stay, creating an inclusive environment. Its unique location between the Limmat and Sihl rivers, right in the city center, should be made tangible again. People and transport, users and uses, the city and nature, all converge at the station – a small space of harmonious coexistence.
The guiding principle divides clear urban spaces that form a robust and overarching vision. The “Grüne Spitze” forms a connected open space with a high quality of stay along the water surrounding the historic train station. Four key locations – the station square, Europa square, Sihlquai, and the square in front of the National Museum Zurich – mark the nodes, transitions, and the start of the adjacent urban area. Finally, the “Stadtperron” or city platform integrates the station with the city in a functional manner. It provides clear orientation around the train station and consolidates the entrances and exits to the underground Shopville. In addition to public transport stops and kiss & ride facilities, sharing mobility services are also available here.
