The Neumünster site in Zollikerberg is the heart of the Stiftung Diakoniewerk Neumünster: It is home to the Foundation (Foundation Management, Catering & Rooms Zollikerberg), the Zollikerberg Hospital, the Neumünster Park Residence, the Neumünster Institute and the Deaconess Motherhouse.
The further development of the Neumünster site presents a unique urban planning opportunity. The concept of “We build good health” is understood as the collaborative evolution of a cohesive living environment and embraces the coexistence and synergy of individuals and communities, nature and culture, place and life.
Mindful engagement with the existing structures (residents, employees, neighborhoods, open spaces, vegetation, and heritage buildings) is just as essential as “healthy” built environment, creating spaces for interaction, well-being, and retreat. A sustainable approach to land use, respect for the site’s inherent topography, and preservation of its valuable tree population form the foundation of the project. These principles define the project’s architectural and spatial value. Subtle interventions strengthen existing spatial sequences while introducing new areas for diverse uses and atmospheres within the existing fabric.
The main framework of the existing buildings, complemented to the east by the teaching and seminar house, encloses the green Neumünster Park as the institution’s clarified landscape centerpiece. To the south, the tree canopy forms a natural boundary, creating a harmonious connection between built and natural elements. Where the building framework and tree canopy intersect, a green landscape arena emerges, alongside a dementia garden, gently set apart.
Surrounding this central element, three distinct neighborhoods and a service zone are arranged. To the west, the Neumünster Passage serves as a regional gateway with direct access to the Forchbahn station. To the south, the residential area “Living in the Tree Garden” provides a living environment within nature. To the east, the service buildings define a local address at the historic Wilhof. To the north, infrastructure buildings accommodate parking and supply facilities. In addition to the existing main entrance in the north-west, the site thus has three new addresses – west, south and east – each with its own references and user groups. As a living, working and healthcare landscape, it offers space for people of different generations in a variety of life situations.
