BX Café (Bronx Café) is the renovation of a long-established club that has contributed to Shibuya’s music culture since opening in 1997. As HSA’s first project within a club setting, the design does not begin with a blank slate. Instead, it works with the layers of time and memory already embedded in the site and considers how they can be carried forward.

The concept is Under Construction. Scaffolding normally used on building sites forms the primary spatial framework of the interior. Organized on a 1.8-meter grid, it extends through the space to a height of more than five meters. Cranes are positioned at the center of this framework. Existing elements, new interventions, materials, colors, and traces of the past are layered together. This process echoes the layered, evolving nature of hip hop remixes: sampling, rearranging, and transforming existing material to create something new.

Rather than following contemporary club aesthetics, the design foregrounds material presence, texture, and the capacity to change through use. The interior is conceived not as a finished image, but as an open framework that continues to evolve through performance and encounter. The past is neither erased nor preserved unchanged. It is reworked and carried into the future. This continuity lies at the heart of the project.

1997年のオープン以来、渋谷の音楽文化を支えてきたクラブ、BX Café (Bronx Café)の改修プロジェクトである。本プロジェクトは、ホソヤ・シェーファー・アーキテクツが初めて手がけるクラブの設計でもある。新しい空間をゼロからつくるのではなく、この場所にすでに蓄積されている時間と記憶に向き合い、それらをどのように未来へ引き継ぐことができるかを考えることから始まった。

コンセプトは「Under Construction」。建設現場で使われる足場が、内装の主要な空間フレームを構成している。足場は1.8メートルのグリッドに沿って組まれ、5メートルを超える高さまで立ち上がり、空間全体に展開する。その中心にはクレーンを配置した。既存のものと新たに加えるもの、素材、色、過去の痕跡を重ね合わせる手法は、既存の音を引用しながら新しい音楽へと組み替えていく、ヒップホップのリミックスがもつ重層的で変化し続ける性質と重なる。

現代のクラブ空間に見られる美学を追うのではなく、素材そのものの存在感や質感、使われることで変化していく性質を重視した。内装は完成された一つのイメージではなく、パフォーマンスや人との出会いを通して変化し続ける、開かれた空間の枠組みとして構想されている。過去を消し去るのでも、そのまま保存するのでもない。過去を再構成し、未来へ引き継いでいく。その連続性が、このプロジェクトの核となっている。
