With the construction and the commitment to a boulevard, the Hönggerberg campus transitions from its originally conception as a campus landscape to a knowledge city whose central element becomes the boulevard. The boulevard connotation insinuates ideas of urban centrality that seem only partially realistic for a knowledge community of about 20,000 people. The project therefore creates a central square space, based on the existing campus, which can realistically fulfill its urban objective through the concentration of uses and spaces for movement.
This concentration simultaneously creates space for very specific needs of the Campus Hönggerberg: In a time that seems to be moving ever faster, efficient access to the campus is of great importance. At the same time, as a knowledge setting, the campus requires informal meeting places located at highly frequented locations, analogous to the coffee machines in large companies. To this end, on the boulevard, two needs that at first glance seem to contradict each other are negotiated.
