EXPANDING A PIECE OF THE CITY TOGETHER

A new urban district is set to emerge on the premises of the former SBB repair workshop, known as “Depot G,” in District 5. This district will include commercial, residential and public spaces, as well as green areas. The vision for this new urban district was formulated through an innovative planning process in 2017, involving widespread public participation. All interested parties were invited to contribute their needs and ideas through on-site workshops or online platforms.

The outcome was an urban development concept, synthesized by a team of urban planners, environmental experts, transportation specialists, spatial planners, architects, landscape architects, heritage conservators, as well as communication and process experts. Decisions were meticulously documented and continuously integrated into the design based on process results developed in close collaboration with community members.

Ultimately, the Neugasse project, brings people, spaces, uses, and stories together, collectively forming what makes a city thrive. Urban development is not a series of isolated phases with ever-shifting tools, responsibilities, and sources of knowledge. Instead, it is an ongoing process that seeks to preserve and continually evolve the diversity and potential that have been created.
