Freight shed, Slab and tower – The project at the Altdorf train station completes the context with a readable ensemble characteristic for the Alpine region. It defines a sequence of public spaces along the tracks and enables public live creating a new identity within the mountainous landscape.
The ensemble combines Urner Kantonalbank headquarters, several service and train related facilities for travelers along the swiss north-south axis while also acting as hub for regional traffic.
The new buildings strengthen the axis along Bahnhofstrasse with a representative façade and a new square marks the starting point of the gateway across the Alps.
The project respects the existing protected station building and integrates it into the new urban configuration. The elongated main building with stepped story sideways keeps a low silhouette and connects to the existing freight shed. Towards the south the tower marks and defines the square and marks the gateway across the alps. A site with the appropriate scales and height development emerges, a play in between old and new.
The transparent ground floor includes a market hall and brings a visual connection with the tracks through an open passage. A place to encounters, dis- and embarkment and dwell.
