A coordinated strategy to curb urban sprawl in Eastern Switzerland has taken a decisive step forward. In the latest cantonal vote in the canton of St. Gallen, the sale of land from the Wil West site to the canton of Thurgau was approved, allowing the project to move on to the next phase.
Rather than pursuing numerous small-scale rezonings, 22 municipalities in the Wil region voted for a shared planning approach. The joint development framework aims to consolidate existing land reserves and guide growth within a single, strategically planned site. The Wil West project is conceived as a major economic and spatial development area west of the city of Wil, designed to accommodate new workplaces, infrastructure and services over the coming decades.
Plans envision a holistically planned district with improved transport connections and productive space for businesses and innovation. With the positive outcome of the vote, the project has now passed another significant milestone. For the municipalities and partners involved, the decision marks an important step toward realizing one of the largest regional development projects in Eastern Switzerland.
We are looking forward to the next steps !
