Station Square Olten

Different scales encounter each other at Bahnhofplatz Olten: on the one hand, Olten’s train station is an important hub of national importance; on the other hand, Olten is a small city with a population of around 17,000 residents. Thus, at Bahnhofplatz Olten, large amounts of traffic flow have to be organized within a limited area. The nearby Aare River presents spatial constraints, although at the same time it opens up the potential for high quality spaces.

The central idea is to shift the main street away from the Aare and towards the train station. This creates place for attractive outdoor spaces right next to the river and gives the train station a new address on the riverfront. The Bahnhofplatz extends to the bridge and thus over the Aare into the city. A curved roof spans the open hall of the train station, directs the flow of visitors and allows for easier orientation.

By shifting the street, a compact organization of the bus terminal can be achieved along the plaza-like space of this newly achieved “Stationsstrasse.” Furthermore, buses can stop along safer, more spacious waiting areas, where they are parked ready to drive in the proper direction for their departures.
