Housing Competition „Zollstrasse“

Like a gigantic luck dragon, mon.dragon is writhing in the sun next to a river of steel. While he stretches out and yawns once, a hundred years pass by inside of its rooms. Children grow up. Apartments are inhabited, renovated, connected and left again. Celebrations are happening and trees are planted. From the balconies one can see the ever-repeating arrivals and departures of the trains; from the roof terraces  all have a view of the ever-changing city. Just like in a coral reef, everyday life is bursting in all its colors in this multi-chambered body.

The main building on the Langstrasse marks the public entrée. Restaurant, elevated theater foyer and bar activate the street space. The café lures people inside with its first floor terrace and creates a connection up into the building.  Beside it staircases lead to the balcony overlooking the rails. The main building contains a large entrance atrium with welcome desk and mail boxes, connected with the administration, daily care and offices. On the upper floors of the atrium office clusters, multi-purpose spaces, apartments and hall-apartments are located – a space filled with light full of life and activities.

The railway terrace runs along the body of the main building and connects café, laundry, service spaces, offices and the kindergarten with the playground on the tail of the dragon. The staircases lead through the green terraces between both buildings. The first one abuts on the big community kitchen with the dining space, while the second one links to the multi-story shared winter garden and a community space from where one has access to the apartments and maisonettes.
